How to Run a New Reddit

What’s old is new again. Some people want to make a bunch of money, turns its community on itself, causes outrage. It doesn’t matter for them one bit if reddit becomes irrelevant in a few years time. They’ve already made bank.

Good for them.

Bit of a shame for anyone enjoying such a website.

The core problem is that the incentives completely clash. If you are a VC-fuelled company, potentially looking for an IPO, it makes sense to track everything about your users. It makes sense to force feed them ds wherever possible. It makes sense to kill your API (which often was a key to get traction, but that’s besides the point).

The Solution

While the whole thing of a decentralised system “sounds” good, I don’t see it. I would love to be proven wrong.

Instead, how about this?

Start one organisation, that has the database. And an API. This must be a non-profit!

A second company can be a normal profit-seeking company, which makes a sleak website and phone apps and what not, but it is only using the API of the non-profit. All data and users are stored there!

The second company has the website that users see, the name that normal users know. They can advertise or charge users money or whatever they need to do.

As usage grows, other people/companies can build other websites/apps using this API.

Non-profit should be able to gather some donations. As time goes by, commercial entities profiting from the API use could make some donations.

But it must be non-profit. It can’t be driven by a profit motive.

The second one can, sure. Hopefully it does it well, both for users and for investors. But if it pulls a reddit, all the data is still available and it can continue to thrive with other frontends.

NSFW/Spam/…?

First off, while I’m not suggesting making a direct replica of reddit, I could still imagine something similar to subreddits. These different areas can be tagged to be adult only etc.

Fighting spam is a biggie. I obviously don’t have all the answers in this stupid rant, but this isn’t a new problem.

We now have amazing AI, apparently. Let them weed out the spam/illegal shit.

These are obviously tricky things to fix. But it’s nothing new.

Bla bla

Wikipedia seems to work as a non-profit. This reddit-replacement is much more write-heavy / interactive , but come on?! People in it for the tech should love this challenge, no?

All I’m saying is: replacing reddit with another glorious startup team with hearts of gold is not a solution. That is, if you’re looking to solve the problem for the people.

Cured Beef

I also tried curing some beef for Christmas. Very nice indeed!

I left it in the fridge for 3 days. Might try only 2 next time. Also the meat I used was quite lean, a bit of marbling could be nice.

  • 400 g beef
  • 3 teaspoon salt
  • 3 teaspoon sugar
  • 3 tablespoon cognac
  • bunch of dill
  • 6 juniper berries, roughly crushed

Rub beef with all the stuff. Put in plastic bag. Leave in room temperature for 3 hours, then move to fridge and leave for 2-7 days. Turn bag every day.

When curing is done, remove beef from bag and scrape everything off. Can keep it wrapped in plastic until it’s serving time, then cut thin slices.

Sauce

  • 1/2 celeriac lump, peeled and finely shredded
  • 2 dl mayonaisse
  • 2 table spoon dijon mustard
  • 2 table spoon roughly crushed walnuts
  • salt / black pepper

Boil celeriac shreds a few seconds, they should be crispy. Cool down and wipe chreds dry.

Mix mayo, mustard and nuts. Black pepper. Mix in the celeriac and taste off with salt.

Cured Salmon

This cured salmon is amazing, and really easy to make. Never go for a store-bought one again!

I had about 400g salmon, adjust accordingly. Recipe below is for 1 kg

  • 1 kg salmon file with skin
  • 2 dl sugar
  • 1 dl salt
  • 5 whole white pepper corns
  • 8 juniper berries, roughly crushed w fingers
  • 1 lemon, finely shredded skin
  • 2 table spoons gin
  • 1 bunch of dill

Wipe salmon. Mix all the dryg stuff, rub it into the fish, spash over gin. Cover with dill and put in a plastic bag, tie it up. Leave in room temp for 2 hours.

Then in fridge for 20 hours, turn the bag a few times. When done, take it out, wipe everything off and cut in slices.

Sauce

  • 3 table spoons dijon mustard
  • 2 table spoons corny mustard
  • 3 table spoons honey
  • 3 dl vegetable oil
  • chopped up dill, salt

Mustards and honey in bowl, mix in oil until good consistency.

Taste it up with dill and salt.

A New Beginning

Let’s try again.

What’s new?

I got a son! :)

He’s awesome. So far.

Setting a New Target

Yea, a weekly post is never going to happen. Let’s aim for a monthly post!

Last month or so has been plenty of personal things going (marriage, honey moon, belly of pregnant wife growing), but despite me being the only reader here, I don’t want to write about those things on here. I keep those notes even more private :)

Also, a hand injury has stopped me from using a computer very much.

Excuses! I know..

I started playing around with AppSmith a bit a while ago. I will write about that soon.

Hello World

Very first page on this blog. I am excited.

Will I manage to keep posting a few times per month? Only time can tell.

Good money’s on no, but I’ll show them. 🙈
